Software

Windows - none

Mac OS X - X11 is quick and easy to install and it is free. In OS X 10.4 Tiger and later, it is included in the installation DVD, among the optional software (you need X11, not the X11SDK). For previous versions of OS X, X11 is available at Apple′s website as a free download .

Linux - libXp.so.6
Recent installations (FC 5 & 6): install package libXp
or xorg-x11-libs (Suse 9 & 10) .
Not so recent installations (FC 3 & 4): install package xorg-x11-deprecated-libs .
Older versions had it included in XFree86-libs .

Matlab scripts - Matlab version 6.x or newer. Adjustment will be necessary to make SoundRuler run in previous versions of Matlab. Script versions (.m files) of the figures are provided in the code to circumvent the fact that the figures are created in Matlab R13.2 .

Hardware

Sound Ruler itself does not demand many resources, but sound analysis is very processor intensive. The more extensive and detailed your analyses are, the more you will benefit from a fast computer. Although SoundRuler runs well in a Pentium 2 at 233 MHz, even an upgrade from a Pentium 4 at 1.7 GHz to a Pentium 4 at 2.4 GHz can produce pronounced reduction in analysis time.

The Mac OS X binaries will currently run on PPC machines only, not on intel machines, due to a limitation of the Matlab version that is used to compile SoundRuler. We are studying the best way of working around this issue.

Binary versions
100 MHz CPU (486 not tested yet)
32 MB of RAM memory
50 MB of free hard disk space

Matlab script version
5 MB of free hard disk space

Matlab scripts

Automatic setup (Windows only)
Installation
1- Unzip the SoundRuler files into a folder.
2- Open Matlab.
3- Enter cd foldername, where foldername is the folder where you put the SoundRuler files ex: cd ′c:\program files\soundruler′.
4- Enter Setupsruler.
When done, enter sruler at Matlab′s prompt to run SoundRuler.

Manual setup
1- Unzip the SoundRuler files into a folder.
2- Open Matlab.
3- Add the folder where you put the SoundRuler files and it′s \help folder to Matlab′s path or cd into it
4- run soundruler.m

What does the auto setup do? All it does is to place a sruler.m file in your matlab\work folder. The \work folder is in Matlabs path by default. Then you only need to enter sruler in Matlab′s prompt to run the program.

Removal
1- Back up the files that you might have saved into the folder where you SoundRuler is installed.
2- Delete SoundRuler′s folder.
